2008-06-02 10:31

RECON is a three day computer security conference being held in Montreal, Canada. The conference offers a single track of presentations over the span of three days and also offers a variety of technical training courses. Outpost24 AB's Computer Security Researcher and Software Developer Anthony de Almeida Lopes will be attending the event as a speaker.

At the conference, Anthony will be giving a talk on "Bypassing Security Protections by Backdooring libc". He states, "In this short talk, I will describe several methods for obtaining root after obtaining a normal user account without actually exploiting anything except the inherent flaws in the typical UNIX security model. This is proof of concept talk to stimulate discussion and motivation for implementing better security models in UNIX." This is not Anthony's first time speaking at RECON, he was a speaker at RECON 2006 and gave a talk on a proof of concept virus that took advantage of the NOP areas in executables generated for x86 UNIX, Windows and MacOS X systems for the purpose of increasing difficulty in detection.
